To the strains of “If you’re going to San Francisco…be sure to wear some flowers in your hair…,”60 IBM visitors from their New York office listened and watched as Barbary Coast resident and local historian-photographer, Morton Beebe, presented a 40-minute slide show, a profile of San Francisco titled “Through the Eyes of Morton Beebe.” The event was a prelude to the IBM team’s attendance at the Linus World Open Source Conference which was held at the Moscone Convention Center on August 14.

A day prior to the conference the IBM executives boarded one of Hornblower Yacht’s smaller vessels to tour the bay and listen to Beebe’s keynote presentation. In addition to the lecture, Beebe signed copies of his books San Francisco: City by the Bay. According to Beebe, “It was great, they all seemed so interested in San Francisco’s history…they paid special attention to the old archive photos I have…and they wanted copies [of his book] for their wives and children…” He concluded, “It’s really fun to let others see what I see about San Francisco.”

This presentation was second in a series of shows Beebe is making on behalf of his City. Next on the list is an October 6 date to present highlights and history of San Francisco to a delegation of elected and community leaders from Seattle and the Puget Sound region. This event, organized by the Seattle-based Cascadia Center for Regional Development, will be hosted by Steve Castleberry, CEO of WTA (Water Transit Authority), and include Bay Area political leaders. Purpose of the event is to explore joint concerns about commerce, roadways, vegetation and the solution: our waterways.
