Great to have more info on my great great grandfather's painting. I have a lithograph of it that his daughter, Lillian Doughty had in her home. I look forward to coming into your gallery and perhaps bringing in several watercolors of the bay area that George did. I also have one oil painting done by Burgess, of Reverend Doughty, my other great great grandfather.

If They Build It, Will You Come?

Bocce Court
Approximately thirty local residents gathered in the Bayside Conference Room on Pier 1 on September 7th to hear a presentation on the proposed conversion of the south lawn at Justin Herman Plaza into two bocce ball courts. The presentation, by Lev Kushner of SF Recreation & Park Department and Anne Taupier of the Office of Economic & Workforce Development, explained that the project is to be funded by local businesses, with labor donated by Laborers' Union Local 261. Construction will involve replacing the existing grass with an oystershell bed with redwood trim, and will take about two days.

As with any public meeting in San Francisco, the audience reaction covered a wide spectrum. Several enthusiasts spoke supportively of the project and praised bocce ball as a family - friendly sport that will encourage socializing and picnicking in the area. A league of local businesses was envisaged, although a call for a show of hands revealed that no one in the room actually played the game.

There was strong opposition from some who felt that the space should be left as is and used a multi-purpose venue. They expressed a concern that, if the bocce activity was not popular, then the area would become a wasteland.

Among the most vociferous were those who were enraged at the "process" by which the project had sailed though all the approval steps without any public involvement. The point was made that neighborhood meetings on the topic were not held until after the issue was virtually settled.

The courts are expected to open in October.

Dorian Gray Comes To Life At The Eureka Theatre

Dorian
The Eureka Theatre, at 215 Jackson Street, is currently home to a stunning presentation of "The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Theatre Rhinoceros. Adapted from Oscar Wilde's novel by John Fisher, who also directs, the production tells the story of Dorian Gray's descent into depravity in turn-of-the-century London. Despite the minimalist set, a stellar cast holds the audience enthralled as the young man spirals lower, finally reaching his inevitable doom. Aaron Martinsen is perfectly cast as Dorian, John Fisher (again!) is a brilliant Lord Henry Wotton, and Maryssa Wanlass lights up the stage as Sybil Vane. Two caveats: the performance is approximately three hours long (including intermission), and there is some brief male full frontal nudity, however, it's no big thing. The play runs through September 19th. More at www.TheRhino.org .

SF Waterfront Partners takes another crack at 8 Washington

by JK Dineen
San Francisco Business Times
September 4th 2010.

8 Washington

San Francisco Waterfront Partners has a new plan to develop 8 Washington St. In San Francisco land use politics that could only mean one thing: a new controversy. And, of course, a new lawsuit.

The latest revised plan offers some changes to the scheme SFWP has been working on for four years. On Drumm and Washington streets, it means taller buildings. The tallest buildings would be 12 stories, rather than eight stories, though the heights would vary along the block.

What’s happening?

Is San Francisco’s citizenry less aware than it used to be?
Are city officials worse than they used to be?
Is decency a thing of the past?
I’m asking myself these questions as I walk home from Tuesday night’s SPUR (SF Planning and Urban Research Association) meeting. The topic: San Francisco Nightlife: The death of fun? Or urban peace?

COMPARING SAN FRANCISCO TO LOS ANGELES

Land area, sq. miles

Population

# restaurants

# bars/nightclubs

# liquor licenses

San Francisco
46.7

808,000

688

352

3,564

City of Los Angeles
498

3,800,000

789

159

6,041

Difference
LA = 451.3 sq. mi. larger

LA = almost 3 million more

LA = 101 more

SF = 193 more

LA = 2,477 more

NOTE:
San Francisco has nearly six times the number of ABC (liquor) licenses per square mile and three times the number of licenses per person than the City of Los Angeles — a much greater area. (Data courtesy State of California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control and SF Police Department.)

Club Suede will be a test case for the Entertainment Commission

John Coté, Chronicle staff writer, Sunday, March 28, 2010— When San Francisco's Entertainment Commission takes up the case of Suede on Wednesday, it will be more than a decision to temporarily close the Fisherman's Wharf nightclub where a 44-bullet shootout outside left one person dead and four wounded in February.
Commissioner Terrance Alan, photo courtesy Carolos A. Gonzalez, the Chronicle
Many see it as a test of the commission's will to police its own after being granted expanded powers in November to control and regulate clubs. It comes amid competing outcries: Neighbors are incensed by years of nightlife-related violence and boorishness, while entertainment interests say overzealous authorities are waging a "war on fun" to scapegoat an industry that is a major economic contributor to the city.
Don't miss Wednesday's Entertainment Commission meeting at 5 pm on March 31, Room 406 at City Hall. Topic: Club Suede.

As Budget Gaps Widen,
San Francisco Police Salaries Grow

By GERRY SHIH

Three years ago, Gary P. Delagnes, the president of the San Francisco Police Officers Association, made a bullish prediction after successfully negotiating a lucrative four-year contract: After a scheduled 4 percent pay raise phased in on July 1, 2010, Mr. Delagnes wrote in a note to the officers, the force would most likely fulfill a 20-year mission to become the “highest paid major police department in the country.” Read the whole story here.

March 20, 2010— Most Californians find it hard to believe, as I did, that the state owns 22,272 buildings and structures. This obligation includes 237,000 state employees who administer services to 38 million residents.

It’s also hard to believe that the eighth largest economy in the world—with some of the highest taxes in the nation—cannot pay its bills.

Entertainment Commission's party over

Once again the Chron's C.W. Nevius hits the nail on the head.

Thursday, March 18, 2010— The San Francisco Entertainment Commission has accomplished a remarkable feat—it has managed to anger nearly everyone.

The public complains the commission seems useless and corrupt because so many of its members have ties to the entertainment industry.

The Police Department gripes that the problem of rowdy clubs has been thrown in its lap, and when officers try to enforce the law, they are called fun Nazis. Since returning from Paris where I found at the revered Herme Patisserie what I consider the “perfect croissant” (for some a quest as compelling as the search for the Holy Grail), I’ve been searching San Francisco for a croissant that comes close. I’d often passed by this café on my way to the theatre, usually with not enough time to stop; and after the movie, when it was closed. This time I hit it just right.

In a four-day period between December 30 and January 3, my neighbors and I called the police five times to report incidents happening in our area of North Beach—all occurring after midnight. These incidents included:
  • Nightclubbers lying on our sidewalk screaming and hollering.

  • Nightclubbers returning to their cars so drunk they fell on their backs before opening their car doors—all the while screaming at the top of their lungs.

  • Vandals throwing bottles off the Montgomery Street stairs onto cars and the street.

  • A 2:15 am incident on January 2 involving gunshots.

  • One fun-loving nightclubber vomiting in front of my garage.

BORN ROUND

This being the time of year when we make resolutions for the year to come, many of them having to do with food and weight issues, it’s an appropiate time to review “Born Round” by Frank Bruni.

Many of us will find much to identify with in the story of Bruni’s love-hate relationship with food. Having battled “roundness” myself for most of my life, I sympathize with his struggles. I, too, grew up in an Italian family where food was equated with love, and you couldn’t have too much of either. For all of his childhood and young adult life, Bruni was “the fat one” in his family and among his friends, and none of his later professional successes has eased the sting of that stigma.

THE WORST-RUN BIG CITY IN THE US
Spend more. Get less. We’re the city that knows how.

By Benjamin Wachs, Joe Eskenazi

December 16, 2009, SF Weekly— — Despite its good intentions, San Francisco is not leading the country in gay marriage. Despite its good intentions, it is not stopping wars. Despite its spending more money per capita on homelessness than any comparable city, its homeless problem is worse than any comparable city's. Despite its spending more money per capita, period, than almost any city in the nation, San Francisco has poorly managed, budget-busting capital projects, overlapping social programs no one is certain are working, and a transportation system where the only thing running ahead of schedule is the size of its deficit.

PARIS: NINE YEARS LATER

The year 2001 was not a good year for Americans. It was a double whammy for me. Just weeks before the terrorist attack, I was diagnosed with a serious illness. The recovery from both would be slow and painful.

Adding to that pain, I had to cancel that year’s “Paris Fix.” It would be nine years before I saw the city I treasured again.

Do you really need a car?

Theo Armour, resident
The Gateway

CityCarShare
If you live in the Barbary Coast, the answer to the question Do I really need this car? may well be a firm "No!" We have great access to public transportation. Taxis are generally available within a few minutes. Within walking distance, you can get to the Ferry Plaza Farmers’ Market, Safeway, Ace Hardware, Embarcadero Cinema, Gap and other clothing stores, and great restaurants (and some less expensive ones). Nearly everything you need is available by foot and—if not— somebody wants to deliver it to you.

Plaid: It’s Trendy and Classic

By Cathie Hehman,
Consultant

Looking stylish and trendy this fall is easy if you have something plaid in your wardrobe that fits and is still up-to-date. Plaids are fashionable and timeless classics at the same time.

Tips on Wearing Plaids:
Muted Plaids are Best on Large Women.
Choose plaids with colors that flatter your skin tone. Size is another very important consideration. A small person looks best in tiny to small plaids and taller thinner figure types can wear medium sized plaids. Muted plaids, like the one pictured, are best on large women. Large plaids will call attention to you and your size, but they can add excitement to an outfit as accessories.

It is best to wear one plaid at a time because mixing plaids is tricky. Never mix plaids of the same size and colors. However, you can combine a small check blouse with a multicolor plaid scarf. If you want to wear several plaid items (very difficult) keep a distance between them.
Combine a Plaid Blouse With a Solid Color Found in the Plaid.
Pairing patterns, like animal prints, plaids, tattersalls, paisleys and checks, is considered modern and in style today, but you have to be able to pull it off to look good. Also, don’t wear head to toe plaid or you’ll look like a fashion victim.

When combining an item with a plaid, for example a plaid blouse, choose a solid color that is in the plaid to coordinate with it.

Remember you should try things on to see that they look good together before you can venture out with confidence!

Larger Plaids Are Best used as Accessories.    Wearing Plaid Shoes Draws Attention to the Foot and Lower Leg Areas

Knowing I would have a lot of time to read this summer, I gathered a stack of books and began working my way through them systematically. But I was thrown off course by the release of the latest novel by an author I’ve spent countless mesmerizing hours with over the years; one who, with his opening sentences, lifts me out of my world and places me in his. I speak of Pat Conroy, author most notably of “The Prince of Tides,” and the definitive “southern author” of our time.

I can’t count the number of times I’ve walked briskly along Commercial Street on my way to someplace else and failed to notice the Pacific Heritage Museum. After all, Commercial Street, short in length and gritty in feel, is hardly the place one would expect to host a cultural attraction. Nor is it a destination site where, drawn there on another mission, one would happen upon a museum. With the exception of great dim sum at City View Restaurant, two stores and one mini-park down from Pacific Heritage, I’ve found no reason to be here except as a shortcut when I zigzag my way to Union Square on foot.

If you’re thinking it’s too early to make a reservation for Bastille Day at one of the cafés or bistros on Belden Place and the surrounding French-flavored areas— trust me, it’s not. This annual block party in honor of Marianne, the patroness of French liberty, is a major happening, when city streets in the neighborhood are shut down for one of the longest, most festive Bastille Day celebrations in the country. Fueled by the presence of the French Consulate, thousands of Francophiles, and your basic San Franciscan looking to party, this is the hottest ticket in town.

Over the past half dozen years we seem to have acquired the habit of attending the Memorial Day Ceremony at the Presidio. It’s a low-key, very San Francisco type of event, mixing military and civilians, veterans and re-enactors, politicians and media.

A Word About Book Clubs
A lot more than discussing a book happens at book club meetings. That club members love to read is a given; that’s what brIngs them together. But that’s just the beginning. As the group gets to know and feel comfortable with each other, the discussions are brought to a whole other level. An opinion of a selected title often tells more about the reader, than the book. What each member brings to or takes away from a discussion of the same book is what makes book clubs so enlightening. I can’t think of a more interesting way to make a new friend, or to better understand an old one.

I am an unabashed Francophile. Even during our national temper tantrum that put “freedom fries” on the menu, my fries were always French. One of the things I love most about living in San Francisco is its similarities with Paris, nowhere more so than in the café culture of both. Though separated by a continent and an ocean, San Francisco and Paris are cut from the same café cloth.

SEWER REPAIR AND REPLACEMENT PROGRAM
North Shore Force Main Sewer Improvement Project
(Drumm and Spear Streets, San Francisco)

FACT SHEET

BACKGROUND:
San Francisco's wastewater collection system is a combined system and consists of 1,000 miles of sewers that transport sanitary flow and storm runoff. More than 70% of the city's sewers are over 70 years old. Since the late 1970s, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) has been working on sewer improvement projects throughout the City and at our wastewater treatment plants with the ongoing Sewer Repair and Replacement (R&R) Program. There are usually dozens of these R&R projects happening at any given time throughout the city. Each of these R&R projects, are coordinated with the City's street paving program through the Department of Public Works (DPW).

But lately I’m discovering that there's life beyond the Embarcadero and North Beach. I’m not talking about Fillmore Street. With its high profile boutiques and restaurants and festival—Fillmore is almost an extension of the Barbary Coast. I’ll ask instead, raise your hand if you’ve been to Polk Street lately. No? Come take the “Polk Street Stroll” with me.

In addition to official press, hand-held digital cameras clicked all over the room. It seems everyone wanted one last keepsake of this much loved independent bookstore.

While the majority (65 percent) of San Francisco voters are pleased with the quality of life in San Francisco, and while concerns over homelessness and panhandling are at the top of the list of major issues, San Franciscans are more concerned than ever before with jobs and the economy. In 2008, just 12 percent of voters rated jobs and the economy as a major issue; in January 2009, worries about jobs and the economy jumped to 26 percent. Over the past 50 years, Barbary Coaster Mort Beebe has been a member of four expeditions to the Antarctic: first with Operation Deep Freeze as a Naval Public Information Officer on Adm. George Dufek's staff; then from 1957-1958 hopping from New Zealand to the Antarctic; and twice again from South America. The 1958 Life Magazine coverage of the polar extremes launched Beebe’s career in photojournalism. Now, 50 years later, Beebe and friend, Geoffrey Lee Martin propose to team up again in order to produce a film and book called Return to Antarctica. Their goal depends upon a grant from the National Science Foundation. The purpose: to contrast the past with the present. Below is a reprint from "Ice Stories" from The Antarctic Sun.
