If San Francisco Grows By 150,000 People, Where Will Everyone Live?
March 5, 2013—
As we first reported last month, San Francisco is expected to add 190,000 new jobs by the end of 2040, new jobs that will be filled in part by a projected 150,000 new residents by 2035 and for which a projected 92,000 new housing units will be needed,
double the existing pipeline of units in development throughout San Francisco as mapped above.
Come out for Sunday Streets along The Embarcadero
The Embarcadero will be closed to all vehicles and open to all pedestrians from 11 am to 4 pm on Sunday March 10.

The Barbary Coast Neighborhood Association's Sunday Social on March 3rd drew an overflow crowd of Coasters to the 5A5 Steak Lounge on Jackson Street. Perhaps, like myself, they had come to hear guest speaker John King of the San Francisco Comical who was billed to speak on "the Barbary Coast, the Contentious Waterfront, and the Changing City."
Alas, instead of an energized discussion of the developments on the Embarcadero, we were subjected to a rambling monologue of disparate musings about Pier 70, how the Transamerica Pyramid became an icon, and street life on Valencia.

Can The Embarcadero Handle This Much Traffic?
WATERFRONT GRIDLOCK—Traffic along the Embarcadero already moves at a snail’s pace during many hours of the day. Additional development along this popular thoroughfare will only make things worse, unless public transit options are improved.
For those Barbary Coasters who either drive along the Embarcadero or cross it on foot, the idea of adding traffic from a new Cruise Terminal, an America’s Cup “temporary” concert venue, the new Exploratorium, and a new Warriors Arena at Piers 30-32 must seem like a really bad nightmare.
A Billion Dollar Proposal To Rebuild SF’s Two Busiest BART Stations
A third of BART’s daily riders exit or enter the transit system at either the Embarcadero or Montgomery Street stations. With total ridership up six percent over the past year, now averaging 393,000 riders per weekday,
BART directors are considering a plan to expand and boost the capacity of the Embarcadero and Montgomery Stations, a plan which would take five years and an estimated $900 million to complete.

MOVIE REVIEW: Lincoln

Norman Patrick Doyle
Resident, The Commons
Before I tell you about this movie, I have a confession to make. Over the years I have flip-flopped back and forth on Daniel Day-Lewis's films. I loved "My Left Foot," for which he and my cousin Brenda Fricker won their first Oscars. I really enjoyed "In The Name Of The Father." Other than that, not so enthusiastic. I was a big fan of Spielberg's earlier movies: "Duel," "Jaws," "E.T." After that he seemed to feel that, if he threw enough money at it, the film didn't need meaningful dialog, or intelligent continuity. As for Tony Kushner, all I knew about him was that he had written something called "Angels In America: A Gay Fantasia." Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa.

In 1975, an eccentric genius named Jeremy Lansman and his partner, Laura Ellen Hopper, bought a moribund FM radio station in Gilroy, California and turned it into KFAT, the most famous (or infamous) country music station in US radio history.
Of course it didn't happen just like that, and the full story is engagingly told in Gilbert Klein's new book "Fat Chance."
He chronicles the staff turnovers, the epic mismanagement, the bounced checks, the unique band of disc jockeys, the eclectic and massive record library. He relates how Lansman relocated the transmitter to Loma Prieta, fiddled with some electronics, and suddenly KFAT could be heard from Marin County to Monterey.
Recycling Thanksgiving turkey grease
This holiday season, recycle your used cooking oil. We’ll turn it to biofuel. Most people cook and share meals with friends and family throughout the holidays. That means an increase in leftover used cooking oil. Used cooking oil poured down the drain will clog our sewers, and can cause street flooding—a costly mess to clean up (at $3.5 million a year). To help minimize the amount of grease getting into our sewer system, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission has partnered with local retailers to enable residents to drop off their used cooking oil. It is then converted to biofuel.

HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT
EDITOR'S NOTE: With royalty checks starting to come in, Cathy Fiorello, our local Barbary Coaster, can now officially call herself an author. She shares with you this excerpt from her new book, "Al Capone Had a Lovely Mother."

Cathy Fiorello, resident
The Gateway
Ever since my plane landed in San Francisco several years ago delivering me to my new home, I’ve been pleasantly overwhelmed with the quality of life here. People have been kind and helpful and just as I was thinking some of that “nice” had rubbed off on me, I found myself reverting to the unfriendly New Yorker I thought I had left behind. The reason: like every second San Franciscan I met, I, too, was writing a book.

Dear Neighbors and Friends,
Thanks for reading my neighborhood news e-mails. My first goal with these e-mails and the
www.RinconHillSF.org website and so on is sharing the information that I learn about what's going on in our neighborhood from reading news, attending meetings, and communicating with you! My second goal is to encourage folks to get involved and help to shape this exciting corner of South of Market. I believe that next to the Transbay Transit Center project, the Golden State Warriors Arena (Piers 30-32) project will have a dramatic effect on the Rincon Hill neighborhood.

My Fair Lady

Norman Patrick Doyle
Resident, The Commons
San Francisco Playhouse reinvents this classic Broadway musical as a sexy new production. By stripping the show to its core, the power, brilliance, and humor of the original pour forth with new life.
Performed by a brilliant cast of eleven, with two pianos, this version of My Fair Lady will desanitize your preconceptions of the gritty London of 1912.
Cathy Fiorello finishes her book!
Finally. At last.
For a headline on this story I toyed with “Local Girl Makes Good—Again,” or “Buy it Now!” or “Rush on Down to Get One While You Can” but decided on something more subdued.
But in truth the story is: Finally, this Barbary Coast girl did make very good, and you should rush on over to Book Passages inside the Ferry Building to get a copy of her new book,
Al Capone had a lovely mother.

Some tidbits of interest from our SOMA neighbors
Have you noticed the crosswalk signals along The Embarcadero have been re-programmed to give pedestrians a lot more time to get completely across? Instead of 12 ticks (they're not quite seconds of time you see counting down), there are now something like 31 ticks ... and that's after a longer crossing signal. The SFMTA had to do a significant analysis to make sure the metro trains, F-Market streetcar, and regular traffic didn't get harmed by the increased pedestrian crossing times, but they finally figured things out and made the programming change to the crosswalk signals this past weekend.

Never? Neither had I—it’s only been open three months; word hasn’t gotten out yet. I hope to do something about that because Bask has all the basic ingredients for a successful neighborhood hangout: The food is imaginative and good, the prices are reasonable; the ambience and service are warm and welcoming.
And it’s within walking distance for Barbary Coasters and your out-of-town visitors—there’s more to entertaining than Kokkari and Boulevard. Bask is San Francisco casual at its best.

Cathy Fiorello, resident

OK, here's what this play is about: there's this guy Carmichael who has spent 27 years searching for his left hand which was chopped off in an encounter at the railroad tracks with some hillbillies (or was it?). There's this young couple, a black guy named Toby and his blonde girlfriend Marilyn, who meet Carmichael in a hotel room in Spokane in the hopes of selling him back his hand (or is it?).
And then there's Mervyn, the hotel receptionist who should introduce some sanity into the proceedings, but doesn't.

THE SWEDENBORGIAN CHURCH
Cathy Fiorello*, resident
The Gateway
Did you say, “Never?” Well, I’d never been there, either, but a thread of a conversation in which the church was mentioned sparked my imagination and sent me to Presidio Heights to see it for myself.
It was another of the glorious Sundays, weather-wise, that we’ve been graced with recently. It was also my husband’s birthday and I thought, what better way to celebrate than to take him to a place he didn’t want to go, and follow that up with a birthday brunch at a restaurant he’d never heard of. We boarded the California One bus, I was certain that we were about to discover something fabulous; he just as certain that we had embarked on another of my follies.

I heard a presentation last night by the developer of The Bay Lights project. It's a proposed art installation by Leo Villareal that will put 25,000 LEDs on the western span of the Bay Bridge—viewable from the City's Northeast side (us!) from dusk to midnight for two years.
They are fund-raising for it now and have a $3 million matching grant. So if you think it's a worthwhile effort, now's a good time to make a donation.
Take a look at the artist's rendering of the project, and pass this on to anyone else who may be interested:

North Beach Shooting
Story courtesy
North Beach Reporter
In the early morning of Sunday, April 29, 2012—2:20 a.m., in fact—sleep was shattered as our North Beach neighborhood awakened to the rat-a-tat of rapid firing guns with two groups shooting at each other. When the gunfire ceased, we learned 25 shots had been fired—many of which hit residential buildings and a car. Amazingly only one person was injured.

I-phone thefts are on the rise. Every day I see a report of an I-phone theft. Victims are generally on the phone during these thefts and most often the suspect will approach him/her from behind. Most of us have cell phones and use them often. I would like to offer a few helpful hints so YOU ARE NOT A VICTIM to one of these thieves. I-phone headphones are generally white. Make the switch to black head phones. If you are going to use your phone be aware of your surroundings, keep your eyes constantly scanning for possible dangers. When you are done using your phone secure it on your person or in a bag (purse, backpack) on your person.

KEEPERS OF THE FLAME

Cathy Fiorello, resident
The Gateway
“Act Now! This Offer Expires December 31!”
It was October 2005 when I received this urgent notice from my local crematorium. I had just traveled across the country and moved into my new home in San Francisco, and was looking forward to at least a few “quality-of-life” years in my retirement. I wondered how I had been identified as a hot prospect for a flam(e)boyant exit so soon. It had taken two years for one of my friends with extraordinary wiles to get me to declare my age, yet these keepers of the final flame knew to contact me soon after my plane touched down at SFO.
Why isn't a SoMa playground proposed for the 2012 Parks Bond?
Our good neighbors to the south of Barbary Coast, have researched an important piece of information that is of special interest to us.
On Monday, April 23, 2012 at 6 p.m. at the Gene Friend Recreation Center (270 Folsom at 6th Street), the Recreation and Parks Department 2012 Parks Bond public outreach roadshow comes to our Supervisorial District 6 to hear comments on the proposed list of parks to be improved and fixed up with proceeds from a 2012 Parks Bond (if passed by us voters). Our Supervisor Jane Kim will also be at this meeting to hear our thoughts. I hope you'll attend this meeting and ask that at least one playground get built or refurbished in the South of Market (SoMa) District using the 2012 Parks Bond proceeds.

San Francisco Water Taxi Service Take Two

According to the
San Francisco Business Times, however, the port is resurrecting its plans for the water taxi service and will issue a new request for providers next month with hopes of having taxis roaming the bay in time for the America’s Cup.

In the program notes for
Any Given Day, now playing at the Magic Theatre in Fort Mason through April 22nd, we are told that playwright Linda McLean included no stage directions in her work. This left it to director Jon Tracy to take McLean's surgically crafted dialog and visualize it for us on stage, aided and abetted by four of the finest actors currently performing in San Francisco.

The Theatre Royal Bath production of Harold Pinter's "The Caretaker" at the Curran Theater is a priceless treat for fans of the enigmatic English playwright.
Flawlessly directed by Christopher Morahan, Jonathan Pryce and his fellow actors present us with performances that illustrate perfectly why "Pinteresque" has become part of the language.

Marcy and David Albert attended an informal meeting on Tuesday, March 20 put on by the contractors of Pier 27, Turner Construction, the Department of Public Works, and the SF Port.
They showed some photos of current demo work (which we can see out the window!) and shared the timeline.
Basically they are scheduled to be finished with the demolition of the entire Pier 27 shed and the rectangular administration building on the Embarcadero edge of the pier (not the little square one with the red tile roof—that one is historical and will stay) by the first week of April.
